CHUG THAT RED BULL, GRAB THAT PAINTBRUSH, AND WERK!

Colin Young-Wolff/Red Bull Media House

Red Bull has come up with a really cool art competition – turn a standard Red Bull refrigerator and turn it into a work of art. Or, as Red Bull puts it: “The medium? A Red Bull refrigerator (covered in canvas). The mission: Create.” And create they did!

Elizabeth Harper/Red Bull Media House

25 New York artists gathered at Villain on Sunday, September 9 to create and fulfill this “mission.” Of these 25 works of art, only 3 will be coined winners. And these winners will be revealed tonight, September 13!

So what are they competing for – what’s the grand prize? A chance to show at the “Scope art fair during December’s Art Basel in Miami Beach, the biggest international art event on the calendar.”
Again, the event takes place TONIGHT, September 13 at Villain at 9:00 PM. Go and enjoy the art!

FREEwilliamsburg: An Invitation to Chick-Fil-A

FREEwilliamsburg » An Invitation to Chick-Fil-A

Image c/o www.breitbart.com

Via NY Daily News:
Republican state Assembly hopeful Russell Gallo is trying to get soapbox time on a nationwide controversy by inviting Chick-Fil-A to Brooklyn. Gallo, who’s running in the 45th AD against Democratic incumbent Steven Cymbrowitz, sent a letter to Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy inviting the fast food business to Brooklyn.”
We know, this Chick-Fil-A issue has been flooding your Facebook and Twitter newsfeeds for what feels like decades, but this warrants a post – whatever you believe, this is a pretty ballsy move for a hopeful politician to win over voters. You can read his letter to Cathy in its entirety below:

FREEwilliamsburg: Marilyn’s Love Affair with Brooklyn

For the 50th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe’s death, August 5, NBC News has released old interviews with the iconic movie star. In this interview, she proclaims her love for our fab ‘burb:
When I retire, I want to retire to Brooklyn…it’s my favorite place in the world so far that I’ve seen. I haven’t traveled much, but I don’t think I’ll find anything else to replace Brooklyn. I just like walking around. I think the view is better from Brooklyn, you know, you can look back over and see Manhattan. That’s the best view…It’s the people…I like the streets, just the people and the streets and the atmosphere, I just like it.”
So do we, Marilyn!

FREEwilliamsburg: 88 Reasons Summer in the City is The Tits

FREEwilliamsburg » 88 Reasons Summer in the City is The Tits

Our friends over at Brokelyn have come up with “88 reasons why summer belongs to brokesters” and it is awesome (not just because of the discounts/free events listed). Our personal favorites include:
4. Skinny jeans and gnarly beards are enough to win you discounts at the Brooklyn Cyclones’ Williamsburg Night.
8. Naked bike riding. Naked book reading. Why do anything with clothes on?
9. Less clothing also means less laundry
35. Don’t think we forgot about fire hydrants. All you have to do is find a sexy fireman and ask him to open one.
75. Those 6am walks home from the party are a lot more sparkly and sweet in the summer. Until the sky explodes and out comes the angry sun from Super Mario 3.
88. A broke-ass pizza-delivering baby-daddy named Mookie did right by his lady with a few well-placed ice cubes. Go fill that tray right now.
And obviously:
80. The satisfying sound of popping a Brooklyn Summer Ale with a lighter from your pocket.

The block party’s line-up includes:
Avi Wisnia

FREEwilliamsburg: 4th Annual Punk Rope Games

FREEwilliamsburg » 4th Annual Punk Rope Games

Rope on, Punk! Punk Rope is a team activity that is a “cross between recess and boot camp, which blends rope jumping, fitness games, and creative calisthenics.” Sounds too fitness-y for you? Think again. This isn’t just any athletic field day. No, no. There are rubber chickens involved. Yes, rubber chickens, used in the 1-on-1 Rubber Chicken Toss and the Rubber Chicken Relay. Other items on the agenda include Punk-Ups, Spoons, and Double Unders. There is also an activity reminiscent of day-camp color-wars – writing a Team Fight Song (try to think beyond “We’ve got spirit yes we do, we’ve got spirit how about YOU!”).

The Punk Rope Games will take place Sunday, June 24 from 10AM – 1PM, rain or shine, at the William Sheridan Playground between Wythe Ave & Berry St and Grand St & South 1st St here on our very own turf, Williamsburg. Teams must consist of 4 members, so choose your teammates wisely – nobody wants dead weight during the Long Rope. And like any competition, there will be crowned winners and an accompanying Awards Ceremony/After Party at Crown Victoria Bar (60 S. 2nd St between Kent & Wythe Ave) from 1:30PM – 4PM, with food & drink specials for competitors and fans alike.

So gather up your fittest friends, start writing that victorious Team Fight Song, and register for the 4th Annual Punk Rope Games! May the odds be ever in your favor.

FREEwilliamsburg: Leslie Knope to Attend City Council Meeting?

FREEwilliamsburg » Leslie Knope to Attend City Council Meeting?

It appears as though Brooklyn Councilman Brad Lander thinks that he could teach newly-elected councilwoman Leslie Knope (aka Amy Poehler of NBC’s “Parks and Recreation”) a thing or two. Lander wrote a congratulatory letter to Ms. Knope in May inviting her to “spend a day as a Council Member of the City of New York,” stating that he “can provide [her] with valuable insight into the role of a City Council member.”

While explaining what goes into a typical day of a Councilman, he mentions a key incentive – Knope will not run into her nemesis department, the library: “you will definitely love that our local library has been closed for years due to construction (no librarians around here, lately).”

Lander closes by hitting her soft spot – officiating the marriage of Penguins: “if you have any spare time during your visit, I know of two very enamored penguins at the Prospect Park Zoo who have been waiting for the right officiant to get married.”

Clearly Mr. Lander’s letter was a joke. But let’s join him in rallying for Ms. Knope to come to Brooklyn and bring Pawnee’s magic with her!

FREEwilliamsburg: Reminder: Brooklyn Waterfront Beer Festival

FREEwilliamsburg » Reminder: Brooklyn Waterfront Beer Festival

Thirsty? If it’s beer you crave, then you’re in luck! This Saturday, June 16, is the Waterfront Brooklyn Beer Festival, held at 5 North 11th Street.

This beerfest includes lots of food (The Morris Truck, Cornelius, Cool Haus, Sheep Station, The Brooklyn Star, Sigmund’s, and South Brooklyn Pizza) and live music (The Nepotist, The Suit & TYree & BiggThurrsty, Isle of Rhodes, In Like Lions, and Vinyette).

Also, this Sunday, June 17, is Father’s Day. If you didn’t know that already (you’re welcome for the reminder), you probably haven’t gotten him a gift yet. So, this could be your answer – spending quality time downing beers with Dad will probably make him much happier than a new tie or the classic “World’s Best Dad” mug.

Tickets are on sale now, with two sessions and three different ticket packages. Happy Beer Day!

FREEwilliamsburg: Lightbulb-Eating Magician Arrested for Robbing Brooklyn Banks

FREEwilliamsburg » Lightbulb-Eating Magician Arrested for Robbing Brooklyn Banks

From The New York Times:
"A self-described magician and escapist who once set a record for eating a household light bulb in fewer than 34 seconds was arrested and charged with committing a string of Brooklyn bank robberies."
Being a magician doesn’t guarantee you’ll be any good at robbing banks. This particular bank robber, Robert J. Williams, 22, also holds the record for eating a light bulb at an incredible speed (33.86 seconds, as per recordsetter.com) – truly a man of many talents. Perhaps he thought he could get away with these robberies by eating the cash, or making it magically vanish? Whatever the case, he was arrested Wednesday, June 6. Brooklyn banks are now safe from the magical robber.

FREEwilliamsburg: Poets House Walk Across the Brooklyn Bridge

"The annual poets house benefit and walk across the Brooklyn Bridge starts at 6:30 p.m. tonight at 1 Center Street and ends at Fulton Ferry with a sunset reading of Walt Whitman’s “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” by Galway Kinnell. Better yet, Bill Murray (as in Bill Murray) and Marie Howe are also participating in the walk. The whole thing ends with dinner at a nearby restaurant.”
